Succulents are currently having a moment. Because they are easy to care for, come in just about every color, and are so cute, we think they should become more popular soon. Here are a few things you should know before you pick up your next stonecrop or agave plant:

Succulents are native to desert locations.
Since succulents store water in their leaves, they first appeared in areas with long dry seasons (such as Africa).

Sap-filled leaves are the source of their name.
Sap is the juice of succulents, which comes from the Latin word sucus. The leaves of these plants are also nourishing and help them survive in extremely warm weather (meaning you only need to water them once a week, since they thrive in sunlight and dry air).

A succulent can be found in 60 different plant families.
This includes families such as Cactaceae (cacti) and Xanthorrhoeaceae (aloe vera).
